Course Overview

Communication is essential to the success of any business. This skill facilitates work and interpersonal connection at every level. Big Think’s five-module course* is designed to provide a 360 view of communication that focuses on improving your team’s personal approach to connecting and communicating with others.

In this nine-hour course, you will gain a renewed sense of what grounds you in your approach to communication, practice crafting and delivering a compelling message, and consider the role of technology in how you connect and communicate every day.

Learning managers can choose between two options for Module 5 on virtual communication: Option A for general audiences or Option B for managers.

Know Yourself: If you don’t know yourself, how can you convey confidence to others? In this module, you will explore how your values and beliefs form a foundation for communication and how feedback is essential to self-awareness.

Craft Your Message: Words are more than a jumble of letters on a page. Every word has particular meanings and connotations — each one needs to be carefully selected. In this module, you will learn how to craft well-written communication that increases clarity and meets the needs of your audience.

Present Your Ideas: To engage your audience, presentations must be creative and engaging. In this module, you will learn how to take listeners on a journey and apply strategies for presenting your ideas with confidence.

Strengthen Interpersonal Skills: To successfully spark meaningful connections, keep your level of curiosity high and your guard low. In this module, you will learn how to strengthen interpersonal connections with clients and colleagues.

Engage Virtually (Module 5, Option A for General Audiences): In the modern workplace, technology is a necessary component. In this module, you will learn to embrace technology and adapt behavior to communicate in a virtual world.

Manage Virtual Engagement (Module 5, Option B for Managers): With the growth of virtual teams in recent years and move to cloud and virtual technologies, workplaces are becoming increasingly digital. In this module, you will learn how to help shape organizational efforts to communicate more effectively in a virtual world.

Heighten Your Craft (Add-On Module: Advanced): Business writing is a skill that evolves with practice and attention to the nuances that allow for growth and improvement. This module is an advanced look at how you can refine your skills of constructing content, framing information, and finding or developing the narrative in your written communication to better guide and engage your audience. By the end of the module, you will have four different strategies to add to your writing toolbox and ideas for applying them in your work.
